Parish Wildlife Quiz

Most of Launceston Parish Wildlife's stalwarts plus other members and friends, 31 in all, attended St Mary's Hall on November 7th for the annual wildlife quiz and a very enjoyable evening was had by all.  Brian was there in spirit, having compiled the questions and also having a letter containing his most recent news read out by Brenda H.

The evening commenced with hot drinks and refreshments provided by various members and served up by Mary Groves and Irene Nash - always a good way to start.  Malcolm gave a short report and suggested we meet in January for an AGM and event planning for 2009.  Everyone agreed so formalities were kept to a minimum.

Then we spent a little while buying wildlife stuff including books (from Brian), plants (from Jenny) and crafts (from Dave and Mary).  One member even found her own camera case for sale, (having mislaid it on a photography course in the summer).  The evening raised over £80 (including sale of raffle tickets).

After some initial problems with the projector the quiz got under way.  The questions were based on what we had (or should have) learned at the various walks and meetings over the past year.  During the marking there was a chorus of disagreement when the answer to a butterfly identity was announced as green hairstreak and our inquisitor, Brenda, who did a splendid job throughout, was forced to accepy the will of the majority and concede the answer was silver washed fritillary.

The winners were The Clueless Clethers, Gill Nicholls, Brenda Parker, Pat Harmsworth and Sue Morey with 63 points.  Runners up were Beetle Bank, Mary and Tony Atkinson, Ian McClenaghan and Win Gilson, 58 points and 3rd were the Famous 5, Jenny and Pete Bousfield, Steve Higgins, Hilary Gifford and John Clutterbuck, 54 points.  The prize was a box of chocolate pigs, donated and appropriately wrapped by Dave Groves and Certificates made by Irene and presented by Brenda.
