Baby Hedgehogs

Quite an event yesterday in our garden - an odd squeeking noise had Eric and I questioning what bird was making such a loud noise.  It turned out to be no bird at all but a tiny baby hedgehog, small enough to sit in the palm of my hand, fully formed and looking like a minature adult.  On closer inspection we discovered another, slightly bigger one (brother or sister), both quite distressed at being separated from their siblings.  Later we heard another, now familiar, squeeking from the hedge above our garden and saw another baby.  They were all very active despite it being early evening and still very light.  Being worried that our cats might harm them I put them in a box with some dry leaves in it and some cat food beside them.  They did not touch the latter, and went in and out of the former.  Once darkness had fallen I went about the garden with a torch and discovered an adult.  Peace of mind that mum or dad would come and rescue said babies (which had most likely fallen out of the hedge above - indeed one of the babies was trying to climb the stones to get back.)

This morning I was mortified to discover that the two little ones were still around the cardboard box and still calling.  Obviously the parent was having none of it.  Finally we decided that the best thing to do was to put them back in the hedge from whence they had come.  They continued squeeling for a bit and since then we have had silence.  I suspect they may have found their family again.  On reading websites regarding baby hedgehogs, it appears that at about 4-5 weeks old they leave the nest and have to fend for themselves, and I imagine it may have been their first outing.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with such tiny hedgehogs?  Did we do the right thing?  One thing for sure our slug population should plummet with so many hungry mouths.  We knew we had a hedgehog as we had seen it and seen the result of its night's feeding, but having a family (with two literally dropping in) is a real bonus.
